CHUNKY rocking rhythms, catchy melodies, heartfelt lyrics and face-melting guitar solos. These are all the hallmarks of a typical Guns N’ Roses track. Fans of hard rock have been feeling the emotive and hard-hitting delivery of sweltering tunes from the seminal American band since it first released its astounding debut album, Appetite For Destruction back in 1987. The scorching studio album featured a dozen rocking numbers that quickly put the band from Los Angeles, California on the world map and added more fuel to the fiery rock phenomena of the time. From this release, fans were introduced to the group’s most famous and recognisable tune, Sweet Child O' Mine. The earworm hit single was supplemented by two other hit singles, Welcome To The Jungle and Paradise City. Hailed by critics as a watershed moment in 1980s rock, the album peaked at No.1 on the US Billboard music charts and went on to sell over 30 million units worldwide. This made the energetic and hungry 20-something rockers, especially charismatic frontman Axl Rose and blazing lead guitarist Slash household names in the rock arena. A year later, the group’s sophomore effort G N' R Lies was released, which gave fans the classic acoustic rock hit single Patience. Fans then got a big treat in 1991 when GNR came out with Use Your Illusion I and its counterpart Use Your Illusion II, which featured a new-found musical maturity from the now ultra-famous and jet-setting band. Released in conjunction with the Use Your Illusion Tour, the songs incorporated elements of blues, classical music, heavy metal, punk rock and classic rock and roll. The 16-track Part I featured the hits Don’t Cry and November Rain, while the 14-track Part II had the now-famous cover version of Bob Dylan’s contemplative hit tune, Knockin' On Heaven's Door. Album No.5 was The Spaghetti Incident? which came out in 1993 and showcased a collection of punk and hard rock covers by GNR. Sadly, this was a time of turmoil for the group and a messy fallout between mainly Rose and Slash saw GNR disbanding. Although Rose kept the GNR flame burning on his own, fans had to wait for 15 years before they got to listen to another release in 2008 with the Rose-driven studio album, Chinese Democracy. GNR’s six studio albums have all fell nicely into the Top 5 spots on the US Billboard charts upon its individual releases and have collectively sold more than 64 million units in total around the world. Armed with six Top 10 Billboard hit singles, the hard rock outfit continues to maintain its popularity over the years with a fairly consistent touring schedule, spurred on by the return of Slash and original bassist Duff McKagan into the fold.
