Early Years: Leslie Cheung was discovered from the 2nd Asian Song Contest in which he finished as second-runner-up. In 1981, Leslie launched his career through his much acclaimed debut, "The Wing Blows On" which transform him to one of the most popular chinese singers of all time. The Superstar: In the 1980s, only three singers monopolize the music scene in Hong Kong and they are none other than Anita Mui, Alan Tam and Leslie Cheung. Leslie continued to built his career with uncountable everlasting hit songs such as "Monica", "When the Wind Rises", "Gone by Love" and many more. Besides singing, Leslie was sought after to star in movies and they included classic ones like "A Chinese Ghost Story", "A Better Tomorrow", "Rouge", Fairwell To My Concubine", etc. As a result of Leslie's hardworking, he obtains top awards in Hong Kong and overseas and has been worshiped by million of fans worldwide as an Icon of the 80s from Hong Kong Retirement: In 1989, Leslie announced his intention to retire early and migrate to Canada. The news startled the whole entertainment field and Leslie formally did so at the end of his 33 full house concerts in Hong Kong, of which he was 33 years old as well. 1990s: Seven years after his retirement, Leslie Cheung announced his comeback in 1996 and it undeniable created a storm in the entertainment scene. Leslie re-launch his career with a new album with Rock Records and continued to hold his sell-out world tour concerts in 1997. With Alan Tam and Anita Mui already fading out of action, Leslie Cheung proved his critics wrong relating to his comeback, and he is back to stay. Be prepared for more Leslie in the next Millennium. New Century: Since late last year, Leslie was signed to Universal Records at an undisclosed sum reported to be the highest figure for a recording contract in the chinese music industry. Leslie continue to annouce his 2000 world Tour which will begin in Hong Kong in August and the concert is already sold out. Not to mention as well that Leslie's evergreen hit, "Monica" was awarded one of the ten most favourite chinese hits of the 20th Century in Hong Kong. In additional to that, Leslie's new movie, titled "Double Tap" has just been release with excellent reviews and audience. Be prepared for more Leslie Cheung from 2000 onwards! |
